STORY OF THE FIRST HEALING SONGS
Shared by Michael Meade, a mythologist and collector of stories, in his book: Why the World Doesn't End, Tales of Renewal in Times of Loss
SHAMANIC SINGING - WHY WE SING?
-
Singing naturally open the heart - the heart is the portal to spirit, it's close to source, and it is through the heart, through love that healing energy of source is carried. An open heart is required to express that frequency and it's nearly impossible to sing with a closed heart.
-
The Shipibo say the melody, more than the words used, carry the healing frequency.
-
We sing in native tongues because they are said to be closer to spirit. I've heard medicine song carriers from several lineages say the same.
Excerpt from Jose Steven's PhD.s book, How to Pray the Shaman's Way:
“Rael insisted on the Spanish pronunciation of vowels rather than the English, claiming that the virations of the vowel sounds in Spanish were closer to the actual physical makeup and shapes of our world. This the vowels related to the following positions and meanings on the medicine wheel:
A - ahhh (East) -- the vibration of purification
E - ehhh (South) -- the vibration of purification
I - eee (West) -- the vibration of awareness
O - ohhh (North) -- the vibration of innocence
U - uuh (no direction) -- the vibration of carrying”
PRACTICE: CATCHING SONGS
Spend some time in nature. Find a focal point - a tree, an animal, a flower, plant, cloud, stone, the moon, sun, stars, clouds, sky, earth, an element - wind, rain, etc. Or if you want, you can go out into the edge of night, like the story. Whatever you choose, tune into it. Say hello, tell it what you appreciate about it, ask it if it would share a song with you. You may even invite it to sing through you. Thank it. Then, resonate with it. Feel it. Get quiet and listen.
Then trust and allow. Allow sound to arise from you. Hum or whistle, play. You may feel moved by a rhythm, or not. Just allow the song to arise from both within and from the outside. It may have words or it may just be sounds (it can be in English). You may wish to record it because some songs are more fleeting than others.
Practice this once, if not multiple times over the next couple of weeks. And, if you remember the song you caught, or you recorded it, sing it throughout the next couple of weeks. Enjoy it in the shower or while you're cleaning or driving. Let it's medicine work on you. Consider that the song is Spirit, has Spirit, has a life in itself.
